Individuals and Households

• The BHPS is a household panel study
  • The initial sample was of households
  • We continually keep track of household level data
  • But in practice individuals are the real sample members
• Individuals have a permanent identifier, PID, that does not change
• In each wave each household has a wave-specific indentifier, wHID
• Within each household each individual has an identifier, wPNO (from 1 to household size)
  • Thus within wave individuals are identifiable by the combination of wHID and wPNO
  • Within waves we can match individuals to their households and to other members using wHID
  • The correspondence between wave specific wHID/wPNO and fixed PID is held in XWAVEID
  • However, PID is found nearly everywhere one could need it so you will not need XWAVEID too often
