Individuals and Households
The BHPS is a household panel study
The initial sample was of households
We continually keep track of household level data
But in practice individuals are the real sample members
Individuals have a permanent identifier,
PID
, that does not change
In each wave each household has a wave-specific indentifier,
wHID
Within each household each individual has an identifier,
wPNO
(from 1 to household size)
Thus within wave individuals are identifiable by the combination of
wHID
and
wPNO
Within waves we can match individuals to their households and to other members using
wHID
The correspondence between wave specific
wHID
/
wPNO
and fixed
PID
is held in
XWAVEID
However,
PID
is found nearly everywhere one could need it so you will not need
XWAVEID
too often
