Familiarisation with panel study structures and issues
Acquisiton of basic data manipulation skills for panel data
Acquisiton of some analytical tools for panel data
To make initial progress on a substantive research project
using the BHPS (particularly later in the week)
Monday a.m.(p): Intro to the BHPS: study
design, sample, interview procedures, questionnaire content.
Data access, the use of single wave data.
Monday p.m.(p): The BHPS data set: intro to
the organisation of multi-wave data. Data handling techniques
for panel data. Linking individual data across waves.
Tuesday a.m.(p): Different
subsamples and levels of analysis in the BHPS. Conceptual
issues in representing longitudinal data. Methods for
manipulating longitudinal data.
Tuesday p.m.(p): Methods of analysis,
paired waves, pooled transitions. Discussion of participants'
proposed research topics.
Wednesday a.m.(p):
Sample attrition and non-response. Missing data bias and
methods of controlling for it using weighting and imputation.
Wednesday p.m.(p):
Some more complex issues in data manipulation, especially the use of
work-life history data
The remaining four sessions will be devoted to further brief
treatment of special methods, to issues that students bring up
in the course, and to students' own mini-projects, using the
BHPS to answer questions of their own. Some time will be set
aside on Friday to present the results of these projects.
