1.4 Documentation

The documentation is extensive and you will come to rely on it. It is available online at http://www.iser.essex.ac.uk/ulsc/bhps/doc/. Volume A contains a very full description of the survey; Volume B has details on all the variables in all the files, with cross-referencing, access by record type (i.e., file) and with indexing by key word.

Today familiarise yourselves with Volume A from its table of contents (most of what you need to know about the survey is there), and spend some time with Volume B.

Volume B contains specifics on all the variables. There are two distinct overview modes:
  1. Subject index: enumerates variables by topic, with wave incidence.
  2. Record type (or wave-specific): enumerates variables within files.
Both modes link to the code-book: full details on each variable.

Explore the documentation and make sure you can find the information you need to conduct analyses.
